Spring 2026 Conditions at Lake Savant
We arrived at Wildewood on May 8th to find the lake still iced over, with 2–4 feet of snow still on the trail. Getting in required walking, cutting fallen trees, and eventually bringing in the Timber Jack skidder to break trail — a true northern Ontario spring welcome. Water levels this spring have been very high, and the lake is looking absolutely beautiful.
The ice-out was the latest we had ever seen in our 10 seasons here. Official ice-out was May 26th, although guests were able to navigate to many great fishing areas well before then. The transition from winter to spring was rapid and dramatic — in just about 10 days we went from ice on the lake, snow piles in the yard, and leafless trees to 80-plus-degree temperatures, open water, green grass, and leafed-out trees. The walleyes and northern pike are now active and feeding aggressively in the shallows, which is always a great sign for the season ahead. Spring is one of our favorite times on Lake Savant — the wilderness is coming alive, the loons are calling, and the fish are hungry!
Walleye Fishing — Lake Savant Spring 2026
Due to the late ice-out, water temperatures started off in the high 30s to low 40s for the first week of fishing. The walleyes had not yet spawned and were staging near shallow bays with creeks flowing in. They started off lethargic due to cold water temperatures, so slip bobbers or a slow jigging presentation were best early in the season. As the water warmed rapidly, the spawn progressed and the post-spawn feeding bonanza kicked in. By mid-June the walleyes dispersed from the shallow back bay spawning areas to the periphery of some of the larger bays like Southeast Bay. Even fishing in the Narrows turned on earlier than normal, beginning in early June.
Northern Pike Fishing — Lake Savant Spring 2026
Northern pike are a cool-water fish, and water temperatures were so cold to start the season that even they were lazy at first. Many low- to mid-40-inch pike were caught in late May through early June. A sucker minnow under a slip bobber proved to be an extremely effective method for large pike early in the season — and for large walleyes too. A slower presentation was key to enticing pike to bite in the cold water. Once the water began to warm, they really turned on and were more like their voracious, top-predator selves!
Lake Trout Fishing — Lake Savant Spring 2026
Lake trout are still near the surface following the late ice-out and can be found in 10–30 feet of water. Trolling with stick baits and spoons along rocky structure has been effective. Even now in mid-June, trout are being caught in and around the Narrows in 25 feet of water or less. As surface temperatures warm, the trout will begin their gradual move to deeper water. Lake trout prefer water temperatures around 50 degrees and can be found anywhere in the lake when surface temperatures are in the 50s — so you never know when you might get surprised by one while walleye fishing!
Whitefish — Lake Savant Spring 2026
Whitefish are being caught incidentally while walleye fishing, and several nice ones have been brought in on small jigs and live bait near rocky bottom structure. Spring is an excellent time to target whitefish near rocky areas in shallower water.
