Why Should I Go Lake Trout Fishing?

Lake trout fishing is popular because this fish fights ferociously, tastes fantastic, you can catch trophy-sized fish that look great mounted, and they have unique challenges that test the mettle of an angler.

Lake trout are only found in the northern half of North America. Some of the northern states in the United States have them. And, then Canada’s wild waters have them. That scarcity lends them appeal to trophy- or record-seeking anglers.

Their size is a second reason they are fun to catch. In Canada, it is not uncommon to reel in a 20- to 40-pound lake trout. Even if they don’t aggressively fight you, which they will, that’s still a lot of weight to pull out of the water.

But lake trout fight. First, it can be a bit tricky to get them to bite. But, second, once they are hooked, they fight to survive. They have the stamina, speed, and strength needed to be a great gamefish.

They have behavior patterns that change throughout the seasons. Savvy anglers pay attention to those behaviors and plan their lake trout fishing excursions to take advantage of those behaviors. Additionally, lake trout can retreat into deep waters. Catching a trophy trout at depth is worth bragging about.

Why Should You Choose a Fishing Resort in Ontario, Canada?

Fishing resorts offer a vacation destination centered around an angler’s favorite activity. When you book a fishing resort, you know what accommodations you’ll have for your party. These often include housing, linens, kitchens, outdoor cleaning and cooking facilities, electricity, plumbing, and sometimes internet, satellite or cell service.

At a fishing resort, you don’t have to worry about the boat, and sometimes even the bait. You can clearly define what will be provided and what you’ll need to bring for the fish you want to catch. The resort will often offer guided tours to show you where and how to fish in that lake. All this relieves pressure, because those at the top fishing resorts of the world know what’s needed to have a successful trout fishing experience.

Then, there’s the beauty of Ontario for the avid angler. Ontario has more fresh water within its borders than anywhere else in the world. This province contains one fifth of the world’s fresh water. Ontario’s 250,000 lakes team with a smorgasbord of healthy fish due to the conservation efforts Canada has employed for over 150 years.

Why Choose Lake Savant for Your Trout Fishing Vacation?

Lake Savant is one of the most beautiful and pristine lakes in Ontario, Canada. It is remote enough that it almost feels like a fly-in destination, but civilized enough that you drive in. This provides more latitude in bringing your own equipment and supplies.

Lake Savant is large and deep with plenty of underwater structures that appeal to a variety of fish. It’s got several streams feeding in and out of the lake, over 400 miles of coastline, islands, bays, and more. A prime ecosystem provides plenty of baitfish to sustain healthy levels of trophy lake trout, among other top-level fish species. It’s a Class A fishery that even provides the gene pool for North American and IGEA World Records.

This lake provides an especially fun spring lake trout fishing adventure when lake trout come closer to the surface in search of food. But it provides great summer and early fall fishing adventures, as well. For instance, in the late season, lake trout develop stunning color patterns. Fin edges on males turn a bright white. Both genders change colors. The basic silver sides of the trout add bright orange-red and turn a dark brown/gold with bright spots. Lake trout put on quite a show in the fall.

How Does Wildewood on Lake Savant Provide the Perfect Lake Trout Fishing Experience?

The best time to fish trout is roughly 3 weeks after the ice thaws. At Lake Savant that happens mid-May to early June. Lake Savant is practically a private lake, not subject to the fishing demands of other lakes. There’s no public access and there are only two fishing resorts on the lake. This lake is not over-fished nor is it over-crowded.

We make sure that our resort is open from the 3rd Saturday in May thru the end of September to maximize the whole fishing season. Many lake trout caught in Lake Savant fall within the 20-pound class, and the largest to date was 42 pounds! Still, larger trout exist out there.

Imagine being the only boat on beautiful glacier-clean water, pulling the biggest lake trout you’ve seen out of the water! That’s why Lake Savant is the prime location for a trout fishing expedition.
