5 Important Facts about Walleye Behavior that Will Make Fishing Them Easier

1. FEED BEST IN LOW LIGHT

Walleye have great vision in waters during low light penetration.

They have an advantage over their prey and like to feed during these times.

The best times to fish for Walleye are:

  • Dawn
  • Dusk
  • Cloudy or Overcast Days
  • Choppy Conditions

2. SCHOOLING FISH

Walleye are schooling fish.

Due to this group swimming behavior, once you catch your first:

  • Throw out a marker
  • Immediately begin casting to the school
  • Vertical jigging tipped with live bait

3. SPAWNING

Walleye spawning season is between April and May with water temperature ranges from 42 degrees to 52 degrees.

  • Female Walleye will take off to deeper water
  • Male Walleye will be near the spawning beds.  Best fishing is in shallow water, near shorelines.
  • Feed all day long and are easier to locate

NOTE: Don’t fish during the spawning season. It is illegal. Walleye season opens on the 3rd Saturday of May.

4. SEASONS

  • Walleye are on the move due to spawning and water temperatures.
  • Know walleye behaviors and their locations to make your fishing more successful.

Did you know? In the spring and fall are when they are the most active. Summer they eat up to five times their body weight every day.

Here’s where you can find them by season:

  • Spring
Walleye are in shallow areas for spawning. Post-spawning, they are on a feeding frenzy in the shallow areas, too.
  • Summer
Walleye will occupy slightly deeper waters, moving toward the shallow waters for feeding. Follow the bait fish to find them.
  • Fall
This is a great walleye fishing time since they return to the shallow waters and generally become aggressive.
  • Winter
Depending on the ice levels, walleye can be difficult to catch because their winter marble eyes get classified as ‘inactive’.
